Ways to Check the Perfect Diamond Shape and Quality (by Maxim Poon Wong)

There are a variety of colours, shapes and sizes of diamonds. Every diamond possesses a combination of these characters, which makes a diamond unique, and these characters help to determine the quality of a diamond.

So, it’s very important to know what characteristics you should look for in order to find the perfect diamond.

It’s valuable to the consumers to know a bit about the diamond prior to purchase and be able to judge the diamond shape and quality. Professional jewellers use a 4Cs grading system to evaluate the quality of the diamond.

The 4Cs of diamond quality are:

  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Cut
  • Carat Weight (size)

Let’s have a look at this 4Cs grading system. When these 4 characteristics of a diamond combine, they paint a perfect picture.

Carat Weight

Out of the 4Cs, the carat weight is the most important one. You can measure the carat by using a calibrating digital scale. Since the large diamonds are costlier than smaller ones, the value and the quality of a diamond is often associated with these characteristics.

Remember, that carat weight is just one of the characteristics to be considered, sometimes a 2 carat diamond with less clarity and colour could be less expensive than the 1 carat diamond with more colour and clarity.

It’s very important to note that diamonds with the same carat weight may look different in size, due to their cutting style.

Always consider 4Cs, not simply the weight only.

Colour Quality

The value of the diamond depends on the colour quality of the diamond, the colourless diamond is considered as the perfect diamond.

As you move downward in the colour scale, you will find rings of yellow and brown start appearing in stones, and this will affect the value and quality of the diamond.

There is one exception also, that, the colour which appears in the stone is fancy, rare, canary yellow and red, then this will lead to a significant increase in the value and quality of the diamond.

Clarity Rating

Clarity rating is another essential element in the diamond shape and quality check process.

Higher clarity diamonds are considered valuable because they are rarer in nature, and the diamonds with cloudy appearance have very low clarity grade and are considered low value.

Low clarity diamonds are prone to cracking and chipping.

Cut Quality

The cutting of the diamond is related to the aesthetic importance of the diamond.

A beautifully cut diamond used to dazzle, every angle of the diamond interacts with the light adorably.

A well-cut diamond will sparkle more and quality cutting is also important for the life of the diamond.

It is very important to have diamond certification of a diamond’s quality by a third party, because of increasing diamond scams.

The diamond’s colour, cutting, carat weight and clarity will be mentioned in the certification.
